Howling is a way of vocal communication dogs have besides barking, shrieking and whimpering. While it may be alarming to you, here are a few reasons why dogs howl.

Dogs howl as a way to get attention. To alert their owners or handlers of danger or to make contact or acknowledge other dogs. Howling is also a response to high pitched noises or sounds that may simulate howling. These reasons are causes that shouldn’t be a cause for concern.

What you should look out for is if your dog howls from separation anxiety coupled with other actions such as pacing, scratching or digging. Also, you should take note should your dog howl in a shrieking manner. This may be an indication of a medical issue and you might want to take your dog to the veterinarian.
